 2017 Preview 


       Pleasant Grove completed the 2016 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region five, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Pleasant Grove's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mortimer Jordan by a score of 22-20.

       Pleasant Grove took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011.

       Pleasant Grove was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Spartans want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.9 points a game.

       Since 2010, Pleasant Grove has gone a combined 52-31. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pleasant Grove has managed to compile a record of 167-117. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 5A and 98th in the AHSAA.

       The Spartans are led by head coach Jim Elgin who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 93-58 over the past thirteen seasons at Pleasant Grove. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Elgin.

       Coach Elgin's overall record as a head football coach in thirteen season stands at 93-58 (61.6%).

       If Pleasant Grove can win seven games this season, Coach Elgin will reach the 100 win milestone.

       The Pleasant Grove Spartans will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season. The Spartans have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-46 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 5A and 21st in the AHSAA.

       The Spartans will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

       The Spartans open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Cordova on Friday, September 1 at Hudson/Kirby Stadium. Last year the Cordova Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 4A region six. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Rogers by a score of 21-14.

       Pleasant Grove and Cordova have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Spartans have a 3-1-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2016 with Cordova winning by a score of 22-21.

       Pleasant Grove returns 5A All-State Senior defensive back Myles Mason. He was named to the first team last season.
